Mounts, Cables and Connectors

Solar panel mounts, tilt brackets, MC4 connectors, extension cables, adapters and fuses compared by wire gauge, length, stated rating and what is included.

What to compare in mounts, cables and connectors

Small parts decide whether a solar setup behaves. A mismatched connector or thin cable causes more trouble than a slightly smaller panel.

  • Connector standard: MC4, Anderson, XT60 and ring terminals look alike across brands but do not mate with each other. Match the listing's stated connector at both ends.
  • Wire gauge: A lower AWG number means a thicker conductor. Compare the listed gauge with the amp rating the listing gives for the length you need.
  • Fuse ratings: Fuses state amps and voltage separately. Pick one whose stated voltage rating covers your system voltage.
  • Conductor material: Copper and copper-clad aluminum are sold side by side. The listing should say which one you are getting.
  • Kit contents: Check whether lugs, crimp tools or covers come in the box or are sold apart. Anything tied into a house or panel board belongs with a licensed electrician.
  • Insulation rating: Cable listings state a voltage and temperature rating for the jacket. Compare it with your system voltage.

Make a short parts list with connector types, cable gauge and fuse ratings before you buy anything. Mixing small parts from different sets is where most returns come from, and a written list prevents it.
