Path, String and Deck Lights

Solar pathway, string, deck, fence and post cap lights compared by brightness, color temperature, run time as stated, mounting method and weather rating.

What to compare in path, string and deck lights

Decorative solar lights are about glow, mode and where the panel sits. Their listings are short, so every line counts.

  • Lumens or LED count: Look at stated lumens first. LED count alone says little about how bright a path or string will look.
  • Color temperature: Warm white, cool white and multicolor options are named. Warm white tends to suit patios and decks, cool white paths.
  • Panel placement: The panel must sit in direct sun. Check the cord length on string lights, since a short cord limits where you can hang them.
  • Modes and timer: Steady, flicker and fade modes are listed, along with any auto on at dusk behavior.
  • Pack size: Sets run from two lights to a dozen. Decide how many you need along the path before comparing options.
  • Stake and material: Plastic and metal stakes differ in strength. The listing names the material, which matters in hard ground.

Lay out the run on paper first. Count the lights, measure the cord and mark where the sun reaches, and the right set usually becomes obvious from the pack size and panel placement. Remember that brightness figures describe a new, fully charged light, so allow for dimmer nights after cloudy days.
