Charge Controllers

MPPT and PWM solar charge controllers compared by charge current, maximum PV input voltage, supported battery types, display or app and stated protections.

What to compare in charge controllers

The controller sits between panels and battery, so a wrong match shows up fast. Start with its limits rather than its features.

  • Maximum PV input voltage: Compare the panel string's open-circuit voltage with this limit, and leave margin because panel voltage rises on cold mornings.
  • Amp rating: The output amp figure caps how much current reaches the battery. Compare it with the rated panel watts at your system voltage as the listing frames it.
  • MPPT or PWM: MPPT units accept higher-voltage strings and suit larger arrays, while PWM units fit small, matched systems and are simpler.
  • Battery profiles: Look for named settings for your chemistry, including LiFePO4 if that is what you own, and for adjustable voltage setpoints.
  • Monitoring: Some units add Bluetooth or a display. Check which one the listing names, and whether data logging is included.
  • Load terminals: A few controllers offer a load output. The listing gives its amp limit, which is separate from the charge rating.

Write down the panel string's open-circuit voltage and the battery's chemistry, then eliminate controllers that fail either one. What remains is a short list that you can sort by amp rating and display features.
