How we scored them
The Solar Score weighs performance, build, value, safety and warranty. For emergency radios, safety means the water resistance the listing states plus the SOS alarm: the Raynic CR1009Pro states IPX3, the Eoxsmile states water resistance, the RunningSnail states water repellent, and the yesiwtc and Emgykit state an SOS alarm with no water resistance figure. Warranty terms run from 18 months on the yesiwtc down to 1 year on three others, and one states no warranty term. How we pick explains the weights.
| Product | Solar Score | Perf. /35 | Build /25 | Value /25 | Safety /10 | Warranty /5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Raynic CR1009Pro Radio | 9.7 | 33 | 22 | 22 | 5 | 2 |
| yesiwtc 090S Radio | 9.7 | 32 | 21 | 22 | 4 | 2 |
| Emgykit BG-086 Radio | 9.6 | 30 | 21 | 21 | 4 | 2 |
| RunningSnail MD-088s | 9.6 | 29 | 21 | 21 | 4 | 2 |
| Eoxsmile Emergency Radio | 9.6 | 32 | 21 | 22 | 5 | 0 |
Scores run from 9.2 to 9.8: each product’s point total is placed on that range, so more points always means a higher score.
How to choose the best emergency radio with solar
Battery and power sources
The Raynic CR1009Pro and Eoxsmile state 5000mAh, the biggest batteries among the five. The yesiwtc states 7400mWh in the title, and the Emgykit and RunningSnail state 2000mAh in pocket-size bodies. The Raynic CR1009Pro states 6-way charging including AC, USB, crank, solar and AAA batteries. The yesiwtc adds 3 built-in cables for Lightning, USB-C and Micro USB so no cord hunt in the dark.
Bands and alerts
All five state NOAA weather bands with AM and FM, and the Raynic CR1009Pro and Eoxsmile add shortwave. The Raynic CR1009Pro states automatic NOAA scanning that alerts in standby, while the Eoxsmile states a 9-second SOS alarm when the National Weather Service issues an alert and the listing states certification by the National Weather Service. The Emgykit states an SOS siren louder than 80 decibels on a 3-second press. For light when the grid fails, pair the radio with our solar lanterns for emergency.
